Asus Extreme N7800GTX TOP Video Card Review :: The Card
Most 7800GTXs are single slot solutions, meaning you can fit them into a single PCI Express slot and it won't cover the adjacent PCI or PCI Express slot. Cooling on the 7800GTX from ASUS includes a revolutionary cooling system on their 7800GTX TOP card. The important features are: a 2000RPM low noise fan, low operating temperature of the GPU, and it requires two slots. I prefer my cards to be single slot. The TOP (Top Overclocking Performance) cooler is very quiet, even on a open test station with no case surrounding the video card. The card is default clocked at 486MHz, slightly lower than a XFX Extreme Edition or eVGA card, but in operation I was able to overclock the card to 506MHz with Coolbits. The card was completely stable at that overclock. ASUS outfitted their 7800GTX TOP with 256MB of 1.6ns DDR3 memory. The reference 7800GTX is clocked at 1.25GHz for the memory. ASUS decided to offer the card with 1.35GHz memory clock, a 100MHz overclock over the reference design. The memory is situated under the TOP cooling design, meaning the memory is well cooled. With Coolbits, I was able to overclock the memory to 1.38GHz, a 30MHz overclock. As the memory is already overclocked, this is decent. All NVIDIA 7800GTX cards are SLI capable, and ASUS has outfitted their card with a SLI "Golden Finger" bridge to facilitate SLI operation. I would suggest using 2 identical cards, as differing clock speeds among differing 7800GTXs might make for strangeness in gaming. The 7800GTX needs more power than the PCI Express x16 slot provides (75W is the maximum a PCI Express x16 slot offers), so ASUS includes a 6-pin power connector to provide the needed power. Input and Output ports on the card are the same as every 7800GTX released to date. Two DVI-I ports and a TV-Out port are present on the side bracket. If dual displays are wanted you can use two LCDs with DVI, one CRT+ one DVI, two CRTs with nView. NVIDIA makes dual monitor use very intuitive with the nView application. One consequence of the replacement of CRTs with LCD monitors is that most cards, including mainstream cards are being manufactured with dual DVI ports. Discuss This Article
