Corsair PC2-6400 Memory Review

Following in the well trod footsteps of Corsair's TwinX line, our modules came to us today in a scant retail packaging, promptly displaying the modules up front, and giving information of the numerous awards the series has won over time on the back. While this package will be worthless for protection if shipped alone, it provides for a nice retail display, holding the modules in place with formed plastic, displaying them to the world.

Moving from the styling of the packaging to that of the modules, we can say that they're simply stylish, the black heat spreaders atop a green PCB look sleek and sophisticated, and definitely complimented the color scheme of our reference board. Looks aside, we see that Corsair has also chosen to utilize heat spreaders with their memory, and with this, choosing to utilize garden variety thermal tape with them. Perhaps the most disconcerting part to this however, is how the heat spreaders seem to slide on the modules when they are being pushed into the slot.

We're not sure if it's the spreader itself that's sliding, or just our fingers along it's silky smooth finish, but in the case of the former, some serious damage to the memory could occur. After all, the chips themselves are held in only by an array of small balls of solder beneath them. After our look at the memory, we turned our attention to just what it was rated to do. Clearly (and conveniently) displayed on the side of the module are it's latencies as well as a serial number. While the rating of 5-5-5-12 seems ridiculous to those of us who are used to trying to prod memory into doing some iteration of 2-2-2-X at the fastest speed possible, we must remember to that DDR2, latencies (for the moment) are essentially worthless. Besides this, these modules have no other distinguishing markings, aside from the notation that they were tested and paired together for maximum compatibility and stability.
