Gigabyte AirCruiser G Desktop Router Review

Before we start this review, let's take a little trip back, back to when companies made one thing and one thing only - back before the videocard companies starting getting their hands in the motherboard pie, and before the motherboard companies started to enter the world of perpetuals. As slow as the evolution and expansion of these companies was, it doesn't exactly come as a surprise. Take for example Gigabyte - once just a manufacturer of motherboards, they now make everything from motherboards to video cards, networking equipment and Watercooling - they even have a foray into the chassis market!

While this isn't quite so much as the lumbering giant of ASUS, it's still interesting to see what a company will do next. On our bench today, we have what Gigabyte claims to be a "World First" - a PCI based wireless networking card that doubles as a router, allowing you to simply set up any PC as an access point, personal file server and firewall - something people have been doing, albeit with some frustration via operating systems such as SmoothWall. Gigabyte claims to take all the headaches of these installs with a diskless install (albeit, with a CD included for users on older operating systems). Without any further delay, let's see if this product can do what it's touted to, or if it'll end up frustrating and impossible. Read on to find out.
