Accusys 7500 - Hot Swap RAID Device :: Features
After a fresh installation of Windows XP Professional we tuned up system for our tests. Intel Application Accelerator tool showed us that; it is connected as UDMA 100 disk with 80-conductor cable. Before benchmarking I wanted to see how long it takes to clone a drive. The first disk I tried for mirroring, was the same model as the drive we installed, which was IBM IC35L040 40 GB 7200 rpm. I inserted the second tray, and turned the key to on position without shutting down the system. It took 3 hours 5 minutes and 5 seconds to clone the drive. It is possible to see the progress level by leds. There are 8 led indicators. Each represents 12.5% of the drive. When starting, all the leds are green. Step by step, each led starts to blink, and when that percentage completed, it turns off. If everything is normal, and there is no complete cloning activity, green light scans across the bank of indicators. For my opinion, this fancy scan-across for all day, like the "Knight Rider" car, is annoying. But when I was working on it, all passing by workers stopped, stared and kind of liked that. If there is an error, indicators show you the problem by turning on specific leds. Like bad sector, channel fail, target disk is smaller than source or target disk, UDMA Mode is less than source disk etc. The second thing I tried is cloning the 40 GB drive to 10 GB drive. The total of existing files were 6 GB. But normally, the system didn't let me copy it and showed the error by indicators. I copied the drive to 10 GB drive by special methods. This time I tried to clone 10 GB to a 40 GB hard drive. This time I succeeded. It took 38 minutes to clone. So disk size dramatically changes cloning time. And the increment is not proportional. It took 38 minutes 10 GB and 185 minutes for 40 GB. After booting from 40 GB harddrive I noticed that, when cloning, it partitioned the drive 10 GB. It created and copied the exact partition on the boot drive. It is not a problem. But the problem is, if it is a boot drive, and you would like to extend the partition, Windows XP will not let you. For NT Systems, first partition is the system partition, and it will not let you play with the size. I tried to do the same thing with Logicube Solitaire hard disk cloning device. It copied the 10 GB disk. But it partitioned the second disk as full 40 GB. This is not a minus for the Accusys hot swap RAID device, because SCSI devices are doing the same thing. It took 26 minutes to clone the same 10 GB drive. So it takes %50 more time for Accusys to clone the drive but it is with hot swap function. That is not so bad. Now you are waiting for me to tell the about the RAID 0 striping function. Unfortunately this device is just good RAID 1 mirroring. One more thing to mention is the large cooling fan integrated in the back of the device. We know how disks get hot inside these kinds of closed box products.
