Epson Introduces New Midrange A3 Color Workgroup Printers

The WorkForce Pro WF-C8000 series is designed to provide improved print quality, enhanced ink yields, and increased energy efficiency.

Epson America Inc. has updated its line of A3 color inkjet printers, adding two new workgroup models designed to deliver improved print quality, enhanced ink yields, and increased energy efficiency.

Available only through authorized channel partners, the new WorkForce Pro WF-C8000 series, which replaces the earlier WF-8000 series, officially reaches market on June 5th.

WF-C8000 printers feature a 7,000 monthly page duty cycle, versus 5,000 for their predecessors, as well as an 11,500-page maximum black ink yield and 8,000-page peak color ink yield. Those figures are up from 10,000 pages and 7,000 pages, respectively.

The new products hold up to 1,830 pages and print 24 ISO pages per minute with what Long Beach, Calif.-based Epson says is no warmup time. They also consume 66 percent less energy than the models they succeed, thanks principally to upgrades in Epson’s PrecisionCore print head technology.

WF-C8000 printers come with Epson’s nozzle verification technology, which automatically detects and compensates for clogged print nozzles.

“You end up with more consistent print-to-print color quality and print quality,” says Scott Marsic, a business imaging product manager at Epson.

Nozzle verification debuted last March in the company’s WorkForce Enterprise WF-C20590 product and subsequently appeared in the WorkForce Pro WF-C869R, a color workgroup printer with a replaceable ink pack. According to Marsic, it will shortly be available in forthcoming monochrome printers as well.

Other enhancements in the WF-C8000 series include support through the media cassettes for thicker paper. In previous models, any paper heavier than 90gsm had to be inserted through the rear feeder. The new units raise that figure to 200gsm.

“That allows people who are printing this higher quality media to do higher-end jobs with the same quality they expect through the rear feed,” Marsic observes, pointing to businesses in the architecture, construction, and engineering verticals as likeliest to benefit from that change.

WF-C8000 series printers also feature a more solidly constructed 250-page output tray that’s 35 mm shorter than earlier versions, enabling the devices to fit into tighter spaces.

There are two WF-C8000 series SKUs. The WF-C8190, which succeeds the older WF-8090, is a single function printer with a 2.4-inch LCD display and a $799.99 MSRP. The WF-C8690, which supplants the earlier WF-8590, is a multifunction printer featuring a 5-inch LCD touchscreen display and 50-page automatic document feeder. Listed at $1499.99, it scans 45 duplex pages per minute, versus 25 ppm in the unit it replaces.

Both devices support the PCL and PostScript 3 standards and are compatible with third-party solutions such as Nuance Equitrac Office/Express, Nuance eCopy ShareScan, PaperCut, and nddPrint. Built-in security features include PIN number certification for job release as well as support for SSL, TLS, and IPsec encryption.

Epson last refreshed its A3 color inkjet portfolio in February when it introduced the more modestly-scale, lower-priced WF-C5000 series.
