Thanks to Apple, nearly every computing platform going forward needs to be an "ecosystem." That essentially means they limit software distribution to a single source (often in the name of security), but really because the OS makers now feel that creating software that runs other software entitles them to take a cut of all software sold that runs on their software... or something like that. I guess I wouldn't care too much, except all these companies have to impose their moral senses on society rather than just make sure software is malware free (which Windows 8 has built in software to do already).
Thankfully, the desktop is still free and clear (sorry ARM users!), but the clock is ticking for useful, gray-area apps like DVD-rippers, emulators, Wi-Fi sniffers, and virtual dancing nudie girls.
