I was wondering if anyone knew how good your video card has to be,
i'm currently running it on a geforce fx5200 128 bit.
it will run but i wanted to know which cards are best for using the detailed
hair/fur/grass textures

Well there is a link to ATI on their website... maybe it may have been designed with some special ATI features, but I don't think so.

Are there options greyed out or other things that you can't turn up the graphics?

I haven't seen anything specific that there is any reason you couldn't use graphics at decent settings

Right - I haven't actually seen this myself, but what I think he means is that in the manual the pictures of the characters are quite detailed - you can see the individual hairs and things. On the screen you can't. Apparently it does the same with my Radeon Sapphire, so we were wondering if he needed a special graphics card to see the detail, or whether the pictures in the manual don't actually represent the game!

We've been doing some general sprotting around. His current card is a Nvidia Geforce FX5200 128Mb. Apparently to get all the featrures he needs the same card but a 256Mb. I've found both the FX5200 256Mb memory clock 333Mhz and the FX550 256Mb core clock 270Mhz for similar prices - so which one would be better? Or is there something else in the same price range [~£40 including postage] I should be looking at??

The FX5500 is the same as the FX5200, just faster.

I'd say get a 6200, maybe an X300. the 5500 is a generation older than the 57/5900 and only has pixel shader v2 amoungst other older stuff. A 6200 should perform and look better for about £5 more.

No, I meant is this the particular card you had in mind?
[edited due to fingers only being 10% awake earlier...]

So your basing this off something pictured in a manual?
Not the right way to go and I see no need for an upgrade with that in mind.

The card he has though is below my low standards and could be improved but B&W2 isn't a game based on its looks rather gameplay.

What about the still screenshots. They are very detailed too:

Any printed artwork might be over embellished and an unfair comparison.
