Mind you, I DO plan on getting more RAM, but just need to ask aboot this.

I have one stick o' 256 Megs of Crucial PC2100 DDRAM for my MSI K7T266a.

Now, PC Alert III shows me, at start-up, with only 144 RAM available. By the by, that's the only program running, and I've cut some "processes" that SiSoft Sandra 2002 said I didn't "need". Right now am sitting at 126 available RAM, less than 50%!

Is this "normal" for WinXP?

I have 384MB pc800 and I only have 155Mb free thats 40%! I think this is normall for WinXP. Reminds me I need to do a little fall clean up on mine.

Yes XP is a memory hog! You may want to disable some of the hidden tasks it runs. I had 512mb of DDR pc2700 RAM and it consistently increased the Virtual Memory due to lack of physical memory. That is one reason why I run Windows98SE.

I have disabled some hidden things that SiSoft Sandra said to do. I don't want to go too far.

If I run "services.msc"....holy schmolly! They have 45 things "started" still. I like WinXP's format and how easy to use it is...but damn!

I used 98SE until this year when I built this comp, and never had a problem with it. XP is very nice and all, but it is still pesky with games, and my RAM. evil

I used the information on this site to figure out what services to disable. Please note that Indexing is the first one you should proabably turn off.

I changed three a day until I had gone through the whole list.

On the system listed below disabling services did not make much of a difference. On my Pentium 2 laptop it made a hugh difference.

All things are relative.

It's well known that XP eats memory like hell, I've seen a system with 1Gb PC2700 RAM and only about 400 Megs free after startup.... a little weird stufff that XP
