That's dumb. I don't have any experience with this thermal stuff, so if you guys have any tips please let me know. Also, if you know of any websites or anything with instructions that'd great. Especially pictures of application would help. I obviously don't want a busted processor and don't want to have to pay for another processor. _________________ 2.8 GHz P4 with HT

There are some basic instructions in my Cooling 101 guide and more detailed instructions with pictures at Arctic Silver.
The main thing to remember is to make sure that the paste is about paper thin and that it covers the surface of the die completely. _________________

The surface of the die? What's that? _________________ 2.8 GHz P4 with HT

| Quote: | | The surface of the die? What's that? | The die is the metal plate on top of the P4, with a hole in one corner and the chips specs and serial no.s stamped on it. It is used to dissapate heat, but is not efficient enough, so you need a heatsink to aid this....
| Quote: | Yep. I'm using the paste that came with the Thermaltake.
Why does it void the warranty on the CPU? Intel is crap |
It is a get out clause on the CPU manufacturers behalf, however they will not honour warranty if they detect a different thermal compound from what they recommend - I have seen this first hand with AMD, yet they honour it with a blatantly cracked die? Go figure.... _________________ The trees are bare and everywhere

Do you want to cover up the hole you mentioned? I assume no, but one of my friends today told me that thermal compound is for covering small indentations between the CPU and heatsink.
So basically you want a very thin, round layer on the top of the CPU? _________________ 2.8 GHz P4 with HT

Try not to make it rounded. As for the little hole in the CPU I have no idea on that one. I'm an AMD man myself. _________________ ABIT NF7-S | Athlon 2500XP @ 12x200 | Corsair HydroCool200 | 3DMark2K1 V330 = 15722 ~ 3DMark03 V340 = 4988

If you follow the instructions on the Arctic Silver page for P4s, then you'll be right and you won't have to worry about the hole. Personally, I smooth it over the entire heat spreader on P4s and very little paste goes into the hole. _________________

Ok. I'll try to have one of my friends over and see if he can help me. He has a little more experience with this stuff. _________________ 2.8 GHz P4 with HT

| The little hole it to let air in/out to deal with the pressure of the heatsink. However, the slits under the spreader do that well enough, so don't worry. |

I also already bought another heatsink...it's gonna be here today. It comes with its own thermal paste that I'll use. I've never heard of those voiding the warranty...that doesn't make any sense. |
The tape that I think your referring too, is just used during shipping, and must be removed and thermal paste applied before application, If you did what I think, that would explain the probs.
