CPU = AMD K6 2 ~ 450 MHZ
MOTHERBOARD = ACER V72MA motherboard w/ ALI M1543C A1 Chipset
RAM = 320MB of PC100 SDRAM
HEATSINK = unknown (IBM heatsink & Fan combo came with the system)
OS = WIN 98 SE
POWER SUPPLY = ACBEL 70W Max
VIDEO CARD = onboard ATI Rage Pro Turbo AGP 2x w/ 8MB RAM
SOUND CARD = onboard ESS 16bit Stereo sound
CASE = IBM Aptiva E series Case
OEM SYSTEM = IBM Aptiva E series 2158 model 520

Ok my question is does anyone know what the maximum harddrive capacity for an Aptiva 2158 series w/ an ACER V72MA motherboard? I have searched all over the net and found the Manuals for the board, but it has no specifications on the maximum HDD capacity. I have a (Brand New) Western Digital Ultra ATA 33/66 40GB (WD400EB), which I have tried to install with no luck. The Bios detects it @ 8455MB when I enter it in manually, however I just get a blank screen when attempting to boot the OS. I have tried the following combinations with the new harddrive: Primary Slave, Secondary Master & Slave. Just to be sure I also tried different IDE Cables on both Primary and Secondary channels when attempting to install this new drive. I am under the impression that my board will not support this, however I cannot find any documentation to support this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. confused

It should support at least 32GB - please use the 32GB limitation jumper on your HDD

Tried a newer Bios ?

Take a look at the manufacturers web site for a bios upgrade.
There may be one to increase the hard drive size in the bios to allow it to recognise the new HDD.

Ok let me clarify my problem a bit. The BIOS will detect the HDD @ 8455 MB (this is the maximum my BIOS will support using CHS parameters), however when I attempt to boot my OS the system hangs with a blank screen. As soon as I disable the new HDD the OS boots fine. This is what I don't understand?

I do not have a 32gb limitation jumper on my WD HDD this is what my HDD jumpers look like:

PW2 . .
N/A . .
MAS . .
SLA . .
CSL . .

I don't want to flash the bios unless absolutely necessary, however I will check the manufacturer's bios updates and see if one applies.

You want to let it autodetect and with LBA enabled anyway.

three modes: master, slave, single drive

master: only if another device is on the same cable, it needs to be set for slave
slave: only if another harddisk is on the same cable, it needs to be set for master
single drive: only if NO other device is on the same cable.
