I recently purchased a Dell Dimension 2350 mid-tower PC with a Intel P4 2.2GHz CPU w/ 512KB cache (expandable to 2.4 GHz).

My question is:
Does anyone know what processor socket arrangement/type does Dell use in this type of system (either Socket 423 or Socket 478)?

The 2350 is a socket 478. They did away with socket 423 after one model year run.

OK.

Now, when I purchased this machine it said that it supports processors up to 2.4GHz. Does this mean that even if I wanted to upgrade to a 3.06 GHz P4 478 that either the board or BIOS wouldn't recognize it.

Can I upgrade beyond the 2.4 GHz limit that Dell claims that the computer has, or is this a proprietary thing that they have so the computer is limited on how much it can be upgraded? (I'm thinking long term here).

You should be able to upgrade to any cpu that has the 400mhz fsb which does not include the 3.06ghz, that cpu is a 533mhz fsb. When the 2350 came out the 2.4ghz was the highest cpu out there, that is why it only shows up to that speed.
