Need help identifying the MB in my IBM Aptiva 2158-240

Post by bomber007 »

I'm hoping to upgrade the CPU in my Aptiva 2158-240 from the OEM installed K6/2-350 but can't find out what, if any processor is supported. I have some info from running BIOS Wizard... BIOS Manufacturer = ACER OEM. BIOS ID is IBM95000-M15-991005-R02-D0 EN. Chipset = ALi M1451 rev 4. Please help!

Thanks! Any knowledge of the fastest CPU this board can handle? The spec sheet indicates 400MHz and "higher".

I fear you have to rely on either Acer tech support or IBM tech support on this one. I suggest you send both of them an email.

The board has settings for 100MHz FSB and multipliers up to 5.5x as well as Vcore settings for 2.2 volts so any K6-2 up to 550MHz should work in the board.

Bios support and all? IBM bioses are known to refuse startup with a processor inside that is not listed in their CPU code table...

The K6-2 500MHz is listed in their service parts list that you linked to.

Splitting hairs now aren't we?

The board has jumpers for 5.5x and we Know it will run a 500 so I don't see why it wouldn't run an identical processor that is 50MHz faster.

The bios obviously has support for the K6-2 "family" of processors so I suspect the worst that could happen is that the processor speed may be incorrectly reported IF the 550 wasn't listed in the bios CPU table.

Personally I think that a K6-2 550 is a pretty safe bet in the V72MA.

Thanks for the insight(s). The only way to find out for sure is to take the plunge; which I am doing. Any thoughts on the K6/2 - 533 cpu. I posted an inquiry with AMD Tech Support but have not heard back yet. Worth a try with the V72MA :?: ?
