I really need the BIOS file for this machine -- the old HDD in it is completely dead, and I don't have the BIOS install disk (this machine needs a BIOS file installed to the HDD to access the setup screen).

Have you done a Google search? Found this link which may be of interest. Using a flash drive or USB thumb drive may be an alternate.
The main site for support is this.. http://www.compaq.com/cpq-country/cpq_support.html .
As to a dead hard drive, you may have to replace it with an identical model, if several years old. The machine's BIOS may be limited in types of hard drive models.

Got it back up and running. Replaced it with a 630MB HDD which got recognized, then after some intense googling I found the following files --

PC Setup disk: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp01001-01500/sp1363.exe
PC Diagnostics disk: ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp6501-7000/sp6522.exe

big grin

Seems kind of retarded that HP kept the Compaq ftp for so long with out the compaq http domain being active then they go and redeploy the compaq http domain but move all the stuff from the ftp - just saying

No offense to the HP organization.. but they are an example of how corporations become too large for their efficient management, after absorbing other companies. Keep the "old" brands active separately, or meld them into the main categories? H-P acquisitions:
There once was a truism for industry.. "competition is good for business". But today, that has changed to "if you don't like the competition, buy them out".
