I've had some luck with salvage yards in the past as well. Its worth a look or find a mechanic that can find used parts (which usually means from cars that have have been stripped for parts when they ended up in accidents).

Dark areas on connectors are usually poor connections, like Karlsweldt said. Sometimes the components before and after the connector are not operating correctly and where the dark area forms, is the weakest area.
Part looks fairly complicated though.

Indeed. It is a multi-function module that controls the front and rear seat heater circuits (but not all in one module).. and possibly a steering wheel heater, outside mirrors or rear window defroster, on certain model vehicles! The module is typically located under the seat, up above where it may encounter moisture or injury. But the connector wires may be stressed with constant seat movement, or the "junk" that ends up under the seats!! Some models have only the input power connector, while others may have input power and also control input connections.
Any amount of moisture that gets into the power plug contacts can cause loss of current flow.. and resistive heating, which causes rapid degradation of the plug and socket contacts. The female part of the connection is typically a thin copper sleeve, tinned tor corrosion resistance. But it does not have great value as to form retention. The power connector may carry 15 amps or more when in use.
Check this link for some vehicles.
