If on-board audio, there should be a 10-pin header for front-panel audio. If not using the front-panel feature, you need two standard jumpers to enable the rear-panel jacks. If in compliance with the AC '97 audio standards, the header pins should be the same pinout connections. Look for a tiny painted pointer at the #1 pin. Pins are odd number on one side, even on the other. Pin # 8 would be missing, as a 'key'. Place a jumper across pins #5~6 and # 9~10 to enable rear-panel audio. But consult the motherboard manual to ensure the pinout is 'standard'. This Intel link shows a diagram.
If still no audio, check the Control Panel/System/hardware for any warning symbols that could indicate the wrong driver. The AC '97 audio standard is only a guide.. but there are many brands of sound chips and models.. plus OS versions that may not be cross-compatible.
And.. did the audio install program default to a digital output? Analog speakers cannot utilize digital audio signals. Check for a tic box that enables/disables digital output in the extended audio control panel (double-click the speaker icon in the SysTray box).

No, I am not a real "master".. but truly 'enlightened' by experience. After so many years of working with computers, you become familiar with common troubles.. and their solutions. Many have a simple cure.. but easily overlooked!
Always a good habit to double-check your work back to the last known good point.. saves a lot of time when a problem comes to hand.
Harken back to when older motherboards had a jumper to set either monochrome or color video.. and may not have been marked.. or there were many jumpers to set cache memory type and amount, plus FSB speed/ratio!!!!!!!
