Yeah, that's the weird thing. The website says there is a power cord included but there isn't and there is not port for it to connect anyway. I had even called and asked about that and they said there wasn't an accessory power cable.

at the top back (towards the front of the case as mounted) of the card there is a six pin receptacle... that provides the extra power that your slot can't. you do need that filled. i'm suprised the card doesn't sing an alarm, but they must not have any alarm for that model.

check out some of the pictures from here...

i think the power supply you bought should have the proper 6-pin connector to stick in there. yeah, it's the middle bottom picture from here...

My card has subtle differences to the ones on neweggs site. I had actually already looked at those pictures. There is no 6 pin receptacle on my card.

Here is a picture of my card shot at the same angle, sorry its blurry, but you can see there is no 6 pin receptacle like there is on the pictures you linked.

you can see it a little better here:

I also took pictures from all other angles to show that I can't find a place to plug in another power cable. If you can find one by all means let me know. I wish the problem were that easily fixed.

and someone correct me if i'm wrong, but...

that's it then... pcie 2.1 slots have a higher power envelope they can deliver more wattage than pcie 1.0 slots. this card must be designed to take advantage of that, seeing how it has no alternate connector.

i'd say this is the odd compatibility anomaly that comes along here and there.

it's curious they make such an animal, where did you buy that card at?

I bought it from the exact newegg link you sent me, which kind of makes me angry that the picture shown is not what actually comes in the mail. Also, I'm past my 30 days so I can't even return it. The only options I seem to have are to sell the card and buy a new one, or buy a new motherboard with the newer pci slot.

Thanks for all your help anyway, at the very least I'm closer toward my end goal.

The card in the newegg picture looks like it has the solder pads but no connector in there either.

jdb81, can you show a picture of your card from the backside (with the soldering) so we can check if indeed it has the same card layout?

contact the manufacturer, they may be willing to swap out a card for you if you pay to ship them yours.

hey, there's a chance, right?

HUZZAH!

I finally have my PC up and running to my complete satisfaction. Turns out my 1st instinct was right that the card wasn't getting enough power. My thanks to all of you who helped me, and an extra thanks to bdub for pointing out the fact that the older pci slots don't provide as much power as the new ones. I ended up selling my old card (it was too late to return it) and bought a new one that did have a 6 pin power connector. I'm playing games with beautiful graphics now. Again guys, thank you so much for your advice and insights, I couldn't have done it without your help!
