Hi all, i am new here and i need advice for buying a new SSD. Which SSD will be the best in speed/price/durability ratio? I need max 128GB drive, i think that's enough for system and some programs. Now i have 100GB partition, and have over 30GB free, with all programs installed, so 128GB will be great. Installed games and other stuff are on other partitions.

Only problem is, that MoBo i have support only SATA2 ports, so i will have to buy SATA3 PCIe card to have best performance. How big difference will be between SATA2 and 3 with SSD. Is extra card worth to buy?

Thanks.. lachen
Sorry for bad english, i speak serbian lachen

i just picked up a crucial 128gb m4 drive model CT128M4SSD2.

very nice little drive - after windows 7 64bit installed/etc i had a little over 100gb available.

very quick - POST takes longer than booting windows.

only have BF3 and Skyrim installed currently (until i get another larger drive). huge improvement for load-time performance on both games. skyrim on my 6gb/s physical drive took ~10-15 seconds to load new maps/areas, now it takes <2. for battlefield it's very similar - used to sit on the loading screen for new maps for ~20-30 seconds (sometimes a little longer) now it's <5 everytime.

i can't say that it's a big difference between the new models and the old - but, any solid state drive is going to be faster than your mechanical - even if you just get the 3gb/s versions. their speeds are still very high, especially if you get the late generations of those which are pretty affordable. just keep an eye out for sales on them, they come and go pretty much every day.

I know it's much faster than HDD, in every way lachen

But, what drives makers a should search, OCZ, Crucial, Intel, Samsung....

And how long SSDs life is, what is the best memory chips and controlers?

I don't wanna throw 200-250e for a drive that will crash after half or 1 year lachen

Thanks lachen

And Windows is 7 Ultimate x64

i spent a decent amount of time reading through toms hardware, specifically in their "SSD hierarchy chart".
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-review-benchmark,3139-6.html

from there i did my own reaching out and researching the specific models against each other at different sites.

that chart will give you straight performance comparisons. from the different discussions i've read, many say SSDs will last just as long as spinning disks. basically, unless they have premature failure they will last longer than their useful life (and be replaced by then).

Thanks lachen

I see on other forums and many other stes, that Crucial M4 is realy good drive, nobody complain on performance, or anything else. And Corsair Force GT is slightly faster with compressed files, but Crucial M4 is best in price per GB and performance, and faster with uncompresed files.

WIll see a littile more on link you give me, but i think i will go with Crucial M4 128 GB. big grin

So, i can't find Crucial M4 in my country, but i can Samsung 830 128GB. Price is 180-190e.

Is there any difference between this 2 drives

Samsung 830 MZ-7PC128N - this is for notebook
Samsung 830 MZ-7PC128D - this is for desktop

in performance?

no, they should be identical... after checking amazon's listings, they have exactly the same specs and details in their information. size is the same...weight...everything.

Being basically the "same" model, both are noted as 2.5" drives. The one specifically for laptops may be less power-hungry than the desktop model.
You would need a special bracket to adapt any 2.5" drive to the 3.5" bay of desktop units. No big problem. Check www.newegg.com/ .
But putting a 3.5" drive into a laptop is like trying to fit a 5-piece band into a 4x4 outhouse!!

I've done that before.....

Karl's advice is good. All SSD's are of the 2.5" variant (that I know of), so an adapter or some creative thinking is needed.

my case has 2 specific bays for 2.5" drives - so i had no issues mounting. should take a look and see, it'll be obvious.
