It has been an unusual early arrival of frigid polar cold across Europe.. and also the Americas.
Lake-effect snow is very prominent downwind of open water bodies, when icy winds blow across them before they freeze over. The rising moisture freezes into snow crystals, and can travel hundreds of miles! The areas of Watertown, New York and Buffalo, New York get more than their share of this "lake effect" snow yearly!
The British Isles are fortunate to have the ocean around them, much larger than the Great Lakes. But that arctic cold does not care how big or small the water mass is. Enough rising moisture and enough frigid air, SNOW!
But those areas that experience heavy snowfall are equipped to handle the task.. with giant snow plows and blowers! Giant snow blowers! _________________ F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes! |

Don't mean to start a debate, but....
If global warming is happening, then why did we just get a record low a couple days ago????? _________________ I'm gonna get my new hardware. And my worklog here. |

That link I noted about "El Niňo and La Niňa" is likely the reason. The weather patterns undergo drastic changes due to the changes in ocean currents world-wide. It is technically known as "Thermohaline circulation".
Indeed, we are in a period of global warming.. exacerbated by human activity with burning of fossil fuels and other heat sources. But the Earth has undergone many cycles of warming and cooling over the past several millennium. We are about mid-way in the current warming cycle, according to climate "experts". _________________ F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes! |

I can't pretend to understand, but so-called global warming could cause the next ice-age. Stupid but true. |

Well, the south of England's copped for the next round [my sister's haven't been able to get home since Saturday]... our turn's supposedly coming in the New Year [Yorkshire]...
I'm sure -11C is mild compared to what some of you peeps are used to - but for those of us who aren't it's a bit uncomfortable...
Happy Christmas one and all, btw _________________

It has been an abnormal weather event in Europe. And so too elsewhere about, on our "third rock from the Sun". Perhaps some blame can be laid to the effects of the Jet Stream dipping abnormally low so early in this Winter season. The area of North-eastern California, U.S.A. has record snowfall measuring over six feet. Some news reports deem this Winter weather over Europe the worst in more than 25 years!! _________________ F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes! |

-11C turns to about 12F, which is about what our overnight lows have been for the last week-or-two. normally december is much milder than january or februrary - so, we'll just have to wait and see if we're getting -11F (-24C!) in a couple weeks/months. those are some cold walks into work across parking lots with the wind howling in your face...let me tell you...

Wind chill can be critical when outdoors in Winter. Evaporative cooling from surfaces can drastically lower the temperature on exposed skin! And the harder the wind blows, the lower the respective temperature. At very low temperatures with high winds, frostbite can set in within 5 minutes!!

There is a "new theory" as to the cause of this season's odd weather. There was a Lunar Eclipse Tuesday morning, the first such event on the Winter Solstice date since 372 years ago!!!! Link: _________________ F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes! |

I was up to see that, we had very few clouds last night. Awesome, I would have set my alarm if I hadn't been too wired to sleep. _________________ Mine go to 11 |
