if you use one with the same or very similar southbridge so it uses the same mass storage driver you may get away with it, else you'll have to hook up the drive externally (with an USB/IDE or USB/SATA cable) to another system to copy the data first.
then do a windows reinstall. It may save your data as well but it's better to be safe than sorry. _________________ We hate rut, but we fear change.

Unless you were running RAID 0, you should be able to read your HD with different HD controller - they also make 'adapters' to allow putting an internal HD into an external configuration (you'll need added PS for external IDE). If mounted internally, it should also be bootable if specified in BIOS as Primary (but you'll want to re-install the OS even if it still boots because of chipset changes).
Also, when the mobo 'goes', the PS is immediately suspect (it's a leading cause of dead mobo). _________________ Better living thru technology...

Hi All
I put a different stick of ram in today and all systems are go!! - it works, the thing boots up, no tones just a nice friendly desk top!!
I didn't want to disturb the ram previously because the mobo, cpu and ram were purchased as a bundle and i wanted to leave everything in tact - but the warranty from Maplin was only for 12 months so I swapped the ram today and windows boots up and everything works
i put the dodgy ram in another pc and same thing - it doesn't work
my worry now is why did the ram fail - it was working fine for 18 months and gradually deterorated over 2-3 months?? could something be causing this?
anyway I'm going to put a new stick in for now and chase up the manufacturers (if it has a warranty of it's own)
Thanks for all your input, just feel a little silly not spotting this before now
Cheers,
templeLobe
Oh, by the way - when I looked into the warranty on the motherboard Asus give a 3 year warranty on it - even though this sounds good at first they want you to pay £21 in postage for their RMA - some warranty, don't think I'll be buying Asus again, I like to be looked after if things go faulty... thought you'd like to know. |

Did some more checking, and it looks like Vdata is a off-brand company that sells memory but it may not be the best.. possibly rejects from other brands, or just barely meets the FSB speed ratings. Not many listings on eBay or other Google sources.
If memory is driven over its voltage rating for too long, it will go belly-up. If memory is driven over its timings rate, it will usually always show errors.
But good to hear your system is back to normal. _________________ F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes! |

rumour has it that v-data, a-data and adata are one and the same company:
http://www.adata.com.tw/
it's worth a try... _________________ We hate rut, but we fear change.

I've just sent an email, thanks for link.
the vdata Ltd company is situated in Harrogate, West Yorkshire, UK according to various online directories - but when you ring them they put you through to someone else who puts you through to someone else etc but at the end they claim that this part of the business doesn't exist any more (not sure if this removes their responsibility though!) and no one representing "VDATA" could actually be found...
so, sounds dodgy.
I'll see what happens and let you know
Cheers
