anyone here runs ubuntu?
i'm planning on building a new computer in the next week or so. and this time around, i was thinking of making a partition on the hd and install ubuntu linux on it.
i figured with so many spywares, malwares, trojans, and viruses out there that will unknowingly leech onto our system... it's probably safer to just use linux to surf the web instead.
Is ubuntu really that easy to use? i've installed slackware 3.4 A LOOOOOONG time ago.. and that was pretty much all DOS.. even installing a software was tedious.
Furthermore, if i just want to use ubuntu linux primarily for web browsing... it would probably means i would need a vmware type program right? something that will let me boot into linux without shutting down my pc before logging onto linux?
i know i can have dual os on the same system, but i dont want to have to restart my computer, log in to linux, browse, and then shut down my computer and log back on to windows.
is there a software that will let me log into linux while i'm in windows? and if there is, will it lag the system a lot? slow down the browsing process? |

maybe you would like to give this a shot:
http://wubi-installer.org/
After running a liveCD of Ubuntu that will not install anything on your system, just runs Linux:
http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download
not install, run from CD when you booted from that. _________________ We hate rut, but we fear change.

You used DOS commands to install programs on Linux? No wonder it was tedious.......
Agreed with Evasive, try a liveCD, there's a couple of different variatons out there, but Ubuntu is the easiest to learn quickly. Just have a book handy, there's still some things you need to do from a command line. _________________ Mine go to 11 |

I use this all the time for testing, great free program...
Another thing to look at is like Evasive pointed out, installing within windows, but this means rebooting to use it... Or looking for a small fast linux distro to run like Puppy Linux, you can run off a pendrive.. I have also tried XPUD which again installs within windows and is a fast OS to boot if you just need to go online - this is dependent on hradware, have found wifi card drivers is the biggest issue... _________________ I have been programming on computers since the ZX81.
