Mobo reccomendation

Postby AmEv » Mon Sep 21, 2009 3:17 pm

Got a case to mod. Old innards:
100mhz IBM processor
800MB HDD
??KB FPO/EDO (not sure on either)
PVR/TV tuner (the ONE thing I like about it: in-room TV and game console hook-up capabilities)

OK. It was an old AIO. Dangerous work, but hey. I'm still alive to post, aren't I?

But I did a little experimenting, and found out, with an LCD in place, I could put in a mATX board. Was able to route cables (data and power) no problem.

Also, I got a P4 3.0GHz. Meant to upgrade Compaq, but one pin was transposed.

My question:
What would be the best mATX (not necessarily the BEST) board that supports my p4? And where could I get it?
I'm gonna get my new hardware. And my worklog here.

Not sure. Here's the writing on it:

Intel (M) (C) '01
PENTIUM(R)4
3 GHZ/512/800
5L6WK MALAY
0401A470
I'm gonna get my new hardware. And my worklog here.

You have a socket 478 northwood. Computer geeks has an asus p4sd micro atx board for about $43 with free shipping. Ascendtech.us and 3b tech may also carry some 478 boards.

you want something that has 800Mhz FSB though to run this on full speed.

It runs 800MHz FSB CPUs so should work. You could ask newegg beforehand though.

Now, the power supply.

What would you recommend for this board?

And video card?

*Just as a side question, is there really 2 different kinds of s478s, or would it be called something else? Just wondering, because this is similar to what I saw:

P4
. . . . . . .
. . . . . . .
. . . . . . .
. . . . .

Celeron, the one I was trying to upgrade:

**This is looking at the processor
I'm gonna get my new hardware. And my worklog here.

Nope, only one socket 478. Different chipsets and mobo configurations supported different processor revisions, and a good majority supported all Celeron/P4's up to a point. Obviously, you couldn't drop an 800mhz FSB processor into a board rated for 533 (occasionally you could, it would just clock the processor back by 50%).
Faster than the speed of snot

Two wrongs don't make it right, but I sleep pretty good at night
