Yes, the title is correct.. someone built a desktop with a computer as part of its design! Talk about "Geeky" mods!
Just got my June issue of Popular Mechanics®, and on Page 94 Glenn Derene describes the project.
It weighs about 200 lbs, and is about normal height.
It is a liquid-cooled, 3 Ghz Quad-core system with a 1 Kw PSU. Overall, the desk measures 3 ft. by 6 ft.
The desk was built by Danger Den ( http://www.dangerden.com/ ) of two layers of clear acrylic bolted to an
aluminum frame. 15 feet of clear Tygon tubing holds a half-gallon of glycol, for the cooling needs.
The motherboard is an XFX 790i Ultra SLI, with 4 Gb of DDR3 memory. Two 300 Gb Velociraptor hard drives
for storage; a Palit GeForce GTX 280 video card is extended from the mobo by a PCI-E extension cable
so all the components are minimal height.
The CPU is a 3 Ghz Core 2 Quad by Intel. An Antec TruePower Quattro 1,000 watt PSU is the motive power.
Synaptics made a custom touch-pad for the setup, there is a Blu-Ray Sony DVD, several extra fans and LED
lights. A Dell 27-inch ULtra Sharp LCD monitor provides video.
The PM Website does not yet show the story. Should be available soon.
