I know someone that want's to upgrade the psu in a dell (not sure what the specs are) they bought a few months ago from a 300 watt .

Does it have to be a dell psu, or can they get one at their local bestbuy?

Thanks.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a Dell power supply. I've worked on some Dell computers before and they, unlike Compaq, don't usually have a proprietary power connector on the motherboard. A power supply with the 20+4 pin configuration should work just fine.

If it has a proprietary power connector, what would it look like?

Dell use the same socket as the ATX standard but you need to look at the colour codes on the plug to be sure you have the correct one I'm not certain as to which models use the standard wireing outputs but they don't all subscribe to it. Better safe than sorry.

I highly doubt that it is a proprietary connector. Given that your friend purchased it new only a couple of months ago, it probably has the newer standard 20+4 pin configuration. Here are a few examples:

Old Standard 20 Pin ATX Connector

New Standard 20+4 Pin ATX Connector

Hope this helps.

That's a good guide to follow because as I said not all Dell's use the same pinouts and you will blow the board if the voltages are not on the same pinouts.
I remember Karlswelt had a post with both sets of pinouts for the standard and the Dell alternative.

For references, here is a diagram link for what Dell ATX power plug wiring was, with those dedicated models. The main site for that link is a wealth of info for almost every wiring/pinout need!!

All the new DELL's I have worked on have standard ATX power supplies... I think they got the message from 6 years back....

Use of a 'standard' power connection plug/socket with different power configuration can be dangerous.. and can cause personal injury or permanent damage to equipment. Thankfully, Dell and others awoke to reality on 'standards'! Perhaps it was induced by the extra cost of remapping the power connections on a standard mobo?
