|
|
| My hard disk always stops spinning randomly for a while (ranging from a few sec to over 1 min) I just used the HD tune benchmark and the minimum transfer rate was 0. The transfer rate just jumps from 0 to very high and then 0 again etc. Can anyone tell me what exactly is the problem of the hard disk thx! |

If a fairly new system, it may default to 'maximum' power savings.. which includes shutting down the hard drive when not in actual use. Part of the "Eco-Friendly" trend. This can be set for less than 10 seconds after a read or write access, or up to 10 minutes or more.. or 'never shut down'.
For a desktop system, the drive should operate continuously.. the power savings are negligible, compared to longer life.
For laptops, yes the drive should shut down when not in use, to conserve battery power. But at least a 30-second delay should be common. When a hard drive needs access after a shut down, it could take up to 20 seconds before being available for access!
From the BIOS pages, you have access to how features work.. including video disable and hard drive time-out. And in the OS Control Panel, there are settings that can be made for best economy or minimal economy. _________________ F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes! |

its a desktop system. The disk is WD Caviar Black 1TB. I don't think its the power saving issue since it even stops spinning when im loading something, for example Starcraft 2. Like when im loading a map the hard disk stops and everything just hang there until maybe 10 seconds it start loading again.
My the other old hard disk works well on the same PC, it does not drop to 0 suddenly, it can maintain at a constant rate.
I even had difficulty to boot into windows on sunday night. I was using the PC and suddenly it just power off and I can't even boot into windows. I have to wait until the next day and it became ok (sort of) |

This sounds like a hardware issue, not meaning it is the harddisk at fault. From what you describe it sounds like the system is already unstable and slowly going worse. This may be because of bad capacitors in the power supply or on your motherboard. For more information about this problem and how to check for it see http://www.badcaps.net
Please report back with your findings and a list of what other hardware is in your system. _________________ We hate rut, but we fear change.

could also be some bad software, i think. something taking all cycles, like virus or some type of malware.
but hardware first... _________________ my main rig...

Btw my WD hard disk did not pass its own company's quick test. It is the Data Lifeguard of Western Digital. My hard disk can't pass its quick test, though its smart status says pass.
The error message is this : Quick Test on Drive 2 did not complete! Status code=07 (failed read test element) Failure checkpoint=97(unknown test) Smart self-test did not complete on Drive 2!
So it should still be the HDD's problem, not the capacitors or virus etc. |

Right, RMA first, then with the refurbished/repaired HDD testing time again. If the Data Lifeguard says it's broken, it is broken, should be returned to WD (if still under warranty that is) and exchanged. _________________ We hate rut, but we fear change.

did you run the DOS version of lifeguard... i.e. bootable cd in non-OS environment? i would try that after... have you tried changing your sata cable that leads to the drive? sometimes it's the really easy things that are overlooked.
also with lifeguard in DOS mode, do the long test and try to fix any errors.
does this drive have the OS on it, or just data? _________________ my main rig...
