I'm looking to OC'ing my Radeon 8500LE. I know about the VMOD Pencil trick and all that. However the only thing I'm worried about is cooling. I know that there's ramsinks out there for videocards however I don't know which models would fit on that particular card. Or even if I have to make my own. I have the Radeon tweaker from the Rage3D web site as well.

Also how's the fan and heatsink mounted onto the GPU?? Is it the same type of fastener as a Geforce2MX (two plastic pins). Although I've never noticed anything on the back of the board to indicate that. If I can mount a better heatsink and fan on there it would probably help alot.

right now I can OC the core to about 285 (from about 230) without getting artifacts, however the Ram refuses to go above 250 without giving me artifacts. From what I've read on this, it looks like it's something to do with the voltage. So if I do the pencil trick thing and it works, I want to be sure that it runs cool.

Now I haven't had a chance to check the heat of the card but I figure that if it uses similar componants as the regular card then there shouldn't be a problem. I've successful OC'd it from the base 249MHz to 300MHz for the core and 270MHz for the Memory. (I think the memory could use a little more tweaking but if I do that I really want to add ramsinks)

Radeon cards don't overclock very well. The fan is probably glued on. I would try powerstrip (an overclock program that's available for 30 day free trial). I tried increasing the agp voltage on my 7500, but got error messages, and noticed no real improvement.

Got the Radeon 8500 128 Retail card clocked ootb @ 275/275. Found out the following:

1. Doc Overclock did a whole review on ocing the 8500. Homemade heatsinks. Real good, cheap solution. Search this site for his article.

2. Need to replace the fan and add ramsinks. The equipment of choice seems to be a ThermalTake Crystal Orb (~$12) and TweakMonster Series 4 Copper Ramsinks (~$25 for cool. You need 8 because the DDR needs to be cooled on the front AND back of the card.

3. The fan is glued on. Doc says that it pops off with a flat-bladed screwdriver. I've also seen a lot of people say to put the card in an anti-static bag and then a plastic bag. Put it in a freezer for 15 minutes. The fan just pops right off.

4. The card has the holes for the Orb so you don't have to glue it on. I would use some Arctic Silver III on the core and hsf.

5. Go to www.guru3d and download Radeonator. You can do all the ocing you want from this program.

Haven't done all this yet but have tried the Radeonator just as a quick test and it works great.

I looked at the card and there doesn't seem to be any holes for the orb type coolers. I can clock the core to 300MHz and the memory only goes up to 170, anything higher will cause artifacts. So I'll see if I can get better cooling on it and maybe try to redo the pencil trick thing on the ram. It should oc to about 350 if I'm not mistaken.

Got holes on mine but I have the ATI retail card. The LEs are all done by OEMs and they each have their own designs and memory quality. I didn't buy the LE from NewEgg (made by Sapphire) because the card was clocked at 250/183 versus the ATI reference specs of 250/250. The retail version of the 8500 (not LE) is clocked at 275/275 ootb and hits 9200+ 3DMarks without oc. Can't wait to crank this one up after I make the hsf and ramsink mods.

PS: If you don't have the holes for the orb, you can glue it on with Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive. Doc's article glues the new hsf right on.

Well I think my card is a retail 8500LE as there's no indication that it's built by another company and everything on the card indicates it's built by ATI. (even the clockspeed corresponds) I'll have to look into cooling for the card a little later. Thusfar I've managed to get 6500 out of it on 3DMark Just need a little more tweaking of my system to get it to work properly.
