What Toby B is probably referring to is the cable end connectors. For regular USB, there are six basic types.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB
But for older cell phones, there may be a small slot with up to 20 contacts for a dedicated plug.
I have a 10 year old Nokia cell phone (plain Jane!) with such a connector. Charging socket is a small barrel plug type.
Some 'smart' phones may have a mini-phone jack type, but it can have four or five contacts. Like the "Square" or "Magstripe Reader" used on some iPhones and similar for reading credit card stripes while afield.

I've never seen a (moderately modern) android phone which couldn't connect to a pc - either through a micro or mini usb plug.

pretty much every phone I've seen since 2005(my Samsung A900) has usb directly, or is apple's.

speaking of the A900, while it wasn't android, and didn't have usb directly out of it, it came with a data converter cable that still allowed me to connect to a pc into usb.

with the iphones I have owned, they all had proper phone-to-PC USB cables. The android phone only had the power cable that hooked in the wall.

Dare I ask the make and model of that thing? I am curious to see if we can manage to find a proper connection cable for it. Even the $12 android Phone I bought in the Far East had an USB cable.

Dust in the wind on that... The phone is still kicking around somewhere, but dead as a door nail. Never saw a marking on the phone as far as a brand. If I locate it again I will see if I can locate some info.

Both android and iphone have cloud solutions allowing you to manage your contacts etc online, cloud calander, email file management etc. This means really that phone->PC compatibility is generally moot as basically both your phone and PC are talking to the cloud rather than talking to each other.

All current android phones connect with standard micro usb2/3 connections future ones will probably switch to usb C.

iphones use a more proprietry USB->lightening cable which you've got another type of cable to carry around with you, plus expensive Apple cables have a weak design leading them to fail quite frequently unless you are always careful with how you handle them.

But I'd say that once the phones are connected to a PC it is equally easy to transfer photos etc off either.

Android phones generally have microSD cards which you can plug into PC (notable exception galaxy s6), iPhones do not.

All the major manufactures have a PC app allowing you to sync data etc over usb/wifi. I've only really got experience with the samsung app which works well but don't know how it compares to others.

Most phones and laptops have bluetooth if wi-fi/cloud cannot be made to work...

The android I was using (discussed earlier) was prior to my line being upgraded to net access. Once I got switched over to iphone, I was upgraded to have net access. Since my net and phone services are on someone else's dime I have little to no input on the features I have..
