Re mistakes: I installed a USB pic board with internal power supply but connected a spare lead from the psu- result was a melted new USB board BUU LUCKILY now other damage-not even to the psu!

What type and model of USB pic board was this? If powered from the USB socket, no extra power should be needed.
We all make mistakes.. part of learning. But that user's manual is always worth reading and learning from first!
