I've made an ntfs formatted bootable thumbdrive, and it has the windows recovery disc environment on it, and that all works fine. I can get the windows backup image to live on said thumbdrive (it's a few files in a folder, the biggest file is more than 40 gigs in size) either by copying from backup made on another hdd, or by the trickery listed earlier with making a network shared folder. the only problem is the windows recovery environment will not allow me to recover from a "removable" drive, which is what the thumbdrive is... and the only way around that is to flip a bit, which some thumbdrives have and some don't, or at least some are easier to get to than others.

of course, I'm always looking for more brainstorming power, so I'm happy to explain more carefully where I'm at...

I think that U are at the point showed in the last pic of this article:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wik ... ows-7.aspx

Am I rigth? and U need that after checking the "Restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier" option and clicking "next" buttom U will be able to select the removable disk where U already have the system image stored as the source for the restoration proccess?

it won't let me choose the thumbdrive. it's a problem with the recovery method not letting you use a "removable disk".
that is the issue, the "removable disk" part, it seems. it all works great up to that point.
I'm not sure why Microsoft has this issue with one using those, or if it changes in version after win7.

as for easyre, i'll have to look closer at that... but after a cursory look, I'm not sure it does a full system restore to a fresh hdd. maybe I'm wrong.
