The primary difference is the angle of viewing.. either a wide field of view, or narrow. Most LCD sets have the display pixels set back from the front panel, in a sort of short "tunnel". LEDs or CCFL tubes light the panel from the edges. The ideal viewing angle may be 20° or so. The large format type use shorter pixel 'tunnels', giving a larger field of view, maybe up to 100°. No need for panel edge lighting, as the panel is illuminated from behind.
LFD monitors are ideal for large audiences, and are even used with billboard displays.
