Looking for the right "needle" in a stack of them took many parsing changes!
The so-called "putting the cart before the horse" brought up some interesting links.

yeah, it's sort of like the other conversation I started about how does the dvi port carry sound. lots of twists for results that just miss the mark.
I appreciate the help, though, guys. maybe it just isn't possible? but it seems logical that it could be possible, right?

Are we looking toward just one screen image at the highest quality, or multiple images at good quality?
For use of two video cards in parallel (SLI, CrossFireX), the quality of a single image should be great. With the right programming, two video cards could provide up to four separate but decent quality images.
Some security system designs have 8 or more cameras.. and can display "rolling" images or a tiled screen of all at once. May be some AHA! ideas there. The monitor may have several inputs, or if the video card is in turbo mode, one data cable with time-share bandwidth.

what I envision is that the customer, who already has one of our quadro cards with two dvi ports and one dp port, will buy whatever 4k monitor he buys and run that off the dp port. if he buys two 4k monitors, though, he'll need a way to run the 2nd at full resolution with the remaining two dvi ports. my thought was that there is a way to do that with some type of connector that plugs into the two dvi ports and then connects into a single dp input port on the monitor. that is the best possible scenario.

"Supports resolutions up to 2560x1600 with DVI Dual Link Displays."

well, that's just 2560x1600. what I'm looking for is full 4k, which is at least 3840×2160. this is why it needs to combine both the dual link dvi ports on the gpu end into a single dp port on the monitor.

it very well may not be possible, as my searches have yielded zilch. but I have read something about using two dvi to hdmi adapters to get what needs to done accomplished, like evasive eluded to earlier. this is the second method I thought might be possible. less elegant than what I wanted... but maybe the only one available.

If your idea can be made as one connection cable design, PATENT IT!!
