There is a safety issue with many auto air bags.. they may eject deadly shrapnel if deployed.
More than 7.4 million vehicles may be affected.. back to 2002 models.

Re: Serious AIRBAG recall..
This faulty airbag situation has worsened. To date, almost 34 million vehicle recalls have been done.
Also, six people lost their lives due to "improper inflation" of the air bags from shrapnel.
Some talk of perhaps redoing many recalls from earlier, as the same detonator design was used in replacements.

Re: Serious AIRBAG recall..
yep, i got my letter from mazda that my car(2005) is impacted. however, all it says is "we know you have a recalled piece of equipment in your vehicle, however we can't fix it at the moment, so stay safe until we get a hold of you again."
last i heard they hadn't even completed the recall fixes on vehicles back to the 2008 model years yet, so...it'll probably take at least a year or two before my car gets its turn, and that's if takata doesn't just close shop since it can't make any money on recalled bags. ridiculous.
the great airbag debacle.

Re: Serious AIRBAG recall..
Some vehicles dating back to the year 2000 are affected.

The NHTSA has set up a site so you can check if your vehicle is on the recall list.
About 1/2 down the page, click on "VIN look up". If your vehicle is listed, contact your vehicle dealer group if not notified as yet. This is a serious recall, and some people lost their life due to the defect.

Re: Serious AIRBAG recall..
the problem is there's nothing any owner can do...there simply are not enough replacements for the affected vehicles. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes at least 5 years before impacted vehicles have their opportunity - and in that time period a significant number of vehicles just won't be on the road anymore. the point being, the longer takata takes to make/ship replacements, the less they need to replace. I'd just rather they give me some kind of cash compensation, and i'll trade in my vehicle to a dealership towards a non-potentially-killer vehicle.Karlsweldt wrote:If your vehicle is listed, contact your vehicle dealer group if not notified as yet. it's entirely unfair for consumers to be told to literally risk their lives by using a safety feature, with no ability to rectify it(or in the vast majority of people, the ability to not drive the car until it's fixed).
the most recent recommendation I got was that you are supposed to sit as far back as is possible in the driver's seat. the fatalities, and majority of injuries, reported are from shorter drivers who sit closest to the steering wheel. luckily, I'm 6'6" - so sit as far back my vehicles let me anyways...but still, that's an ACTUALY recommendation on how to not be seriously injured or potentially killed by a safety mechanism.
I wish I could search for vehicles by which takata has no association with so that I could avoid supporting them for the rest of my life.

Did not note the names Bentley and Rolls-Royce mentioned as having Takata airbags.
