VERY interesting thread. Thanks to All who posted in it and to Mr. T for the point-to on the how-to for Nvidia cards.

Indeed, thank you Mr T for that link. So it is possible to piggyback audio on the video stream with a DVI connection.
Did see part of that link earlier, but should have perused deeper.

ja, that's great. it can, and is done. but i'll add that NO spdif audio connection needs to be made in the setup my brother has. but he IS using the same adapter(dvi->hdmi) shown in the how-to, except that it is single-link on the dvi side.

unfortunately, the article does not get into HOW the technology works.

getting back to this... maybe someone will know what kind of multiplexing is done to get both audio and video trasfered over this dvi adapter.
been reading up a little and the Wikipedia page list 6 kinds possible....
space
frequency
time
polarization
orbital angular momentum
code
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplexing

I've learned that Serial Attached Scsi (SAS) transmission maintains more than one data stream per channel on a single cable (4 stream per cable, but supports ALOT of drives)using time-division multiplexing, or at least that's what I've read. is this the same way the dvi adapter is getting it done?

Maybe this is how?

DVI audio is non-standard. What they most likely do is place a digital audio signal on pins reserved for analog. So you must have a card that supports it as well as an adapter that came with the card, or else it won't work.

Have done a lot of browsing on the subject, nothing definitive except that the video card must have a multiplexing chip in its design for carrying audio on the video stream.

yes, Karlsweldt, It seems to be something that no one anywhere has real info on. strange. I've done much searching too.
thanks for the links, i'll check them out.

Does make some sense, if the video signal is pure digital, no need for the analog R-G-B signal.
For analog video single link default, there is a 165MHz bandwidth..
http://www.bnoack.com/index.html?http&& ... -conn.html
From this WIKI link, about 3/4 down the page.. (DVI and HDMI compatibility)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface
A DVI-D source can output HDMI signals including audio (e.g. ATI 3000-series and NVIDIA GTX 200-series).[9] Some multimedia displays use a DVI to HDMI adapter to input the HDMI signal with audio. Exact capabilities vary by video card specifications.

for me it is normal, the drivers for my nvidia GT240 comes with high definitions audio drivers that I think are intended for carries sound trough the video cable. I even see VGA-RCA adaptors that came with an output audio cable
