Dell Optiplex 980 - Bricked?

Postby PDM » Mon Feb 16, 2015 7:01 am

Let me start by saying that I have upgraded the BIOS on hundreds of Dell computers from within Windows by using the Dell exectutable BIOS upgrades, so I'm not unfamiliar with the process, but......

I have a Dell Optiplex 980 Desktop at work NOT running windows that I attempted to update the BIOS on using a bootable USB drive.
I created the (DOS) bootable drive, copied the Dell BIOS update executable to it and booted to the drive.
I entered the name of the executable and the update process started but once the screen went black that was it.

Now I fear I have a paperweight. Is there ANYTHING I can do to recover from this?

Per the forum rules:
Mobo = Dell 0D441T
BIOS type = Dell
BIOS version = BIOS was Ver 9 - attempted to upgrade to the latest version - Ver 16
CPU = Intel Core I3 Clarkdale
RAM = 4 GB DDR3

Thanks in advance.

Many Dell models have a proprietary BIOS. Hope the program you have is authentic from Dell, and compatible.
Found a link for a technical manual.. it may help..
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/pr ... -guide.pdf
The last BIOS update for that system was March 05, 2014. This link gives details about the BIOS program and how to install it..

There is a note about suspending BitLocker encryption before the BIOS update, if active.

With any BIOS update, you do have to wait for up to 2 minutes for the program to be installed. And after that, do the full default reset. Disconnect PSU power, do a few tries to start so reserves are drained. Then use the provided CLR-RTC jumper, and remove the battery. Wait about a minute, then reverse the process. Power up and enter BIOS to set as the system is built.
F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes!

What was the system state before you attempted the bios upgrade?

Did you use this file from Dell themselves?
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/ ... erId=5X8N5

What was the last visible message before the screen went black?

There are some hints on clearing the system config to default in this page:
http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/ ... N284985/EN

Try those. And try a fresh NEW CMOS battery (CR2032 3V Lithium coin cell).
We hate rut, but we fear change.
