Windows Firewall

Postby c327 » Sat Feb 14, 2015 12:41 pm

Hello,

Using XP Pro SP3 and the Windows Firewall. Now that XP is no longer supported should I switch to a different firewall? If so what would be the next best free firewall?

Thanks

The resident Windows firewall is likely outdated. You note you have AVG antivirus, activate the firewall program from that. But don't run two firewall programs.. can cause system slowdowns. The only automatic update from MS for Win XP is the monthly KB890830 "Malicious Software Removal Tool". May be many more months, it will be provided.

AVG (and possibly some other brands) notes they will support Win XP "for the foreseeable future".
A lot of POS and ATM systems run a form of Win XP. Until all are upgraded, we diehard XP hold outs will be safe.
In truth, a purchased program of any kind is better than identical freeware. I have three AVG licenses on active comps here. Less than $60.00 USD per year.
