New problem with the system.. Windows keeps resetting the refresh rate at 85 Hz, and my monitor max is 75 Hz. I reset to 70 Hz preferred, but after two or three days, again the problem. On booting, the Windows screen shows only hundreds of colored crawling dots!!!
Have rolled back the Nvidia driver, reset the refresh rate. Will see what happens. No check box for "accept" or "OK".
When will those 'clabber brains' that want to enhance every feature, whether it works or not, get back in touch with reality?

Today, bad start-up problems with the new Win 7 system.. had to hard-reset it six times! Each time, after the first Windows splash screen comes up OK, then the video goes berserk with hundreds of tiny floating colored dots!
So the system is down for now, later will dig into it to find the cause. When I got the motherboard, had to replace one bad capacitor. Hope there are no more bad ones, but if one or two, can deal with that. Not really wanting to replace the motherboard! Still a big hassle, if having to pull the mobo!

Check your video card for bad caps, sounds more like the culprit this time.

Oh and once you know you got a bad brand of capacitors on your motherboard, rest assured, they will all fail...

Took the system apart, indeed there was another bad cap on the mobo! Replaced it, but still no go with video. Sometimes the 'confetti' screen, or a green or blue screen.. and the system freezes. The caps are small brown ones, 220 mfd at 6.3 volts.. only "brand" found is symbol of small rectangular box, with "KZG" logo. Rated 105°c. Still two more of them on board, guess I will have to dismember the system again, and replace those two. Hope that cures the problem. For now, loosing about 4500 PPD for F@H. Still some of those D975 mobos available, but may have the same "bad caps" plague!!!! Will open the GTX280 and look at its caps too.
Not looking forward to replacing the mobo, and the likely hassle of getting Win 7 registered again.

Normally the brand would be good, but this is a bad series:
http://badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19642

Replace them ALL Karl, no mercy.

I will check your GTX280 for any reports of bad caps as well.

What is the brand on that GTX280? BFG and XFX have cap issues...

After posting "Will open the GTX280 and look at its caps too.", it came to mind.. the card has a semi-sealed enclosure! Probable damage if separating the case! Dumbkoff!
This GTX280 is labeled as Nvidia Model P651, GeForce® GTX 280, part no. 10651-0000-202 H and 600-10651-0000-202 G. BIOS version is 82.00.1C.00.01. (Made in China)
Did a test, stopping (paused) Windows when the first full-color welcome screen came up.. before it went to hi-res. Stayed good for about an hour!
Two of those "bad" caps have been replaced.. will do the other two today. Hope that cures the problem. Those caps likely are part of the cross-bus isolation for data transfer.. not power regulation. All the others have black wrappers, with either a "Y" or "+" on the top.
Shame on Intel® for allowing those "bad" caps to be used on the board!

Update:
Replaced those other two caps, system back together. Same problem!
Searched the Web for notes about 'bad caps' with the GTX280, but nothing in that category.
So taking a chance on a replacement mobo first.. found "NOS" (new, old stock) one on eBay for $104.00 USD shipped. Should be about 3~5 days arriving.
Curious about one item on this GTX280.. there is a small "button" on the back plate, and next to it is the symbol for on/off... That is the LED red/green power indicator. Odd marking for an indicator, normally is for a switch!

Update May 17..
Got the replacement mobo, installed and working. The caps on this one are not the same as the "bad" ones on the other board. Only major difference between the boards is the other one had a BIOS date of 11/15/06 and this one is dated 01/04/08.
Did get a few problems with video artifacts, but settled in nicely after about 15 minutes. Possibly the GTX280 did incur some damage. Will see.
On line and folding today!
