I recently went to Best Buy to price check a few things. When I noticed
their trade-in promotion sign. This thread is in two (three) parts. Part one: How much do you think Best Buy would give me for a trade-in for my current system? *Note* I would replace my HDDs with a new unused drive for
privacy concerns.

MS XP SP3
MSI MS-7181
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
2.21 GHz
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7800GS
Plextor DVD+-RW PX-712A
ASUS DVD-ROM E616P
Maxtor 6Y200P0 Internal HDD x2

Part two: Which of these desktops would be a decent upgrade for a casual gamer?

(Part three): Is there another system I may like better than the ones I picked?

Thx, :)

First rule for any gaming computer.. the on-board video system is not the most desirable. It requires the CPU to do double-duty, rendering video as well as controlling all data flow. And an amount of main system memory is dedicated to its use.
Best to go with an add-in video card with its own memory. Even 'casual' gaming can stress the system, with on-board video.
Do a comparison check on "top ten" reviews.. such as this one..
http://computers.toptenreviews.com/gaming/
Compare the 3D Mark Score for the Radeon HD 8570d against other popular video systems.
Those 'budget' systems normally have only adequate PSU types.. and may not have upgrade options.

Part1... About $50... Seriously, noy worth much more and that would be a trade in against a new system.. It would be more worth to you keeping it as a 'backup' or passing it on to a family member...

Part2... None of them.. Prebuilt PC'slike them are pretty poor if a) you do not know components and b) you want to play games (I presume games like Metro and CoD)..

Part3.. This is what I would class as a basic gaming setup (note - you still need to buy an operating system, unless you want to try for free SteamOS)... You know whats inside and it is upgradeable...

Thx guys.

:? Hmm, I kinda figured the trade-in wouldn't be worth it.
______________

That newegg setup looks good. :)

For a new OS would I be happier with Win 7 or Win 8?

Coming from XP over these many years which would serve me better?

Yes, that New Egg offer looks good!
You can get either Windows 7 or Windows 8 OEM for about $100.00 USD.
The term "OEM" refers to 'other equipment manufacturers', but also is ideal for a DIY computer user. You provide your own technical support and maintenance. No "tech desk help"!
MS has extended security support for Windows 7 until 2020. Vista until 2017.
But if you are using enhanced user interfaces, such as touch-screen and ethereal ("air" gesture motions), then go with Windows 8.
