Gigabyte has prepared a BIOS upgrading tutorial:
http://www.gigabyte.com/webpage/20/HowToReflashBIOS.html
Quite complete. Note: replace any Gigabyte entry with your manufacturer's.
Also: SOYO offers a great (and simpler, text-based) explanation of:
a) How to flash your BIOS.
b) How to determine if you need a 1Mbit (128KB) or 2Mbit (256KB) BIOS.

Thanx for this site, I have been looking for flash bios upgrades for ages, but haven't been able to steel myself into applying them, in fear of messing my computers up.
Cheers again.... |

The procedure from the Soyo website above worked for me. Some of the instructions that I read warned me not to flash from a floppy disk and that made me really nervous because (with XP) after booting from the floppy, I couldn't access my harddrive. I followed the directions and flashed it from the floppy as directed by Soyo and it worked .
There are two files that you need, one is an ***.exe file and the other is a ***.bin or a filename with 3 numbers as the extension.
I Flashed an MSI MS6378X-L motherboard BIOS by downloading a zip file from MSI's website and unzipping it onto a formatted, bootable floppy. The files that were unzipped were awfl823.exe, w6378.350, and two text/readme files. I rebooted using the floppy and typed the following at the A:\ prompt:
awfl823 w6378.350 /f
then followed the directions to complete the flashing process.
I remember the utility asking me if I wanted to save the old BIOS and saying yes, I named it "oldbios" but didn't know if I was supposed to give it an extension. I didn't think it would matter because my BIOS version and video card were incompatible anyway so I was going to replace the board if upgrading the BIOS didn't work.
Here's some more info on it below, I recommend reading as much about it as you can about it so that you are comfortable with the procedure.

This is only my second time flashing a BIOS so if you see something else that makes more sense for your system, use it.
Hopes this helps and GL. |

That's been my line for so long I've gotten rather tired of it; so, as soon as I move - two weeks from now - my very first project is to flash both of my machines. Asus a7n8x deluxe ver.2 and a ECS that's even newer. Thanks for giving me the courage.
BTY the gigabyte page is still up. I just visited it today. |
