Time for me to bring a visit there and meet some old friends. It is where I started my ID/support journey on the internet some 15 years ago...

The story so far: -

All drivers installed except Multimedia Audio Controller. My problem in that the programme asks for the device to be connected and I do not have it here.

Service Pack 2 successfully uploaded together with all current updates.

So, as I touch wood, all seems to be well - WELL DONE CHAPS!

Hopefully one last question. When I installed XP I deleted a partition and then formatted the drive. When I tried to re-instate a partition it would not play ball, so the C Drive is currently not partitioned. The C Drive will not be used for backup so do I need to partition the disk using XP?

The harddisk has been emptied completely when you deleted that partition so no partitions to re-instate I think...

Asks for a device to be connected? Strange, normally it should find the onboard audio. Or do you mean the audio control panel asking what is connected to the audio connectors at the back?

The programme asked 'Please plug-in C-Media PCI Sudio Device device'. Yes, device twice. So instead I went to Device Manager and guided it to the driver folder and the drivers uploaded i.e.no more exclamation marks.
I went back and attempted to load the C-Media programme and it still asks for the device to be plugged in.
Unfortunately I only have the main unit for the surround sound system with no diagram on how to connect.

Apologies, I have managed to get sound!

I think that just about wraps up all of my problems.

With all your help you have brought an old computer together with an old brain back to life.

Thank you very much!!!!!!!

You will be pleased to know that my brother is back from France and is delighted with his 'broght-to-life' PC.
However, I was not pleased when after installation he produced a box set of 4 CD's, which were the original motherboard installation CD's He chirpily said 'I found these, would they of been of any use?" PDT_Armataz_01_02

LOL! Yes, life can be like that. But, in this way you have learned a great deal about how to identify a motherboard and where to go for advice if you cannot get the answer at first :)

You have certainly given me an appetite. I have placed a new posting "Steep Learning Curve". I am sure that the questions that I have asked will be of interest to many people who want to clear away some of the IT mist. I hope that I have posted it correctly.
