I am trying to fix my dear brother's PC. Unfortunately, he thinks I'm an expert.
I have reloaded XP and then tried to install Service Pack 2 but each time come up with screen problems i.e. very pixilated.
Prior to loading Service Pack 2 the Device Manager shows that there is a problem with several drivers: -
Video Controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
PCI Simple Communications Controller
SM Bus Controller

The Belarc Report indicates the following: -
Processor
2.45 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
8 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
Not hyper-threaded

Main Circuit Board
Board: i845G-ITE8712
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG 07/08/2002

I have tried to find the maker's name on the motherboard but to no avail.

When I connect to the internet without loading Service Pack 2 there are several problems including rundll.exe error message which I have only managed overcome by completey re-installing XP.

Is there a site where I can 'simply' download the drivers. I would then place the files on a CD and then transfer them to the offending PC.

Please keep it simple, dispite my brother's belief - I am definitely not an expert!

The Intel "845" series is discontinued.. but still in use by some people.
One problem is that the board may be genuine Intel® based, or a product for an OEM company.. with a semi-dedicated BIOS program/features.
If an OEM product, the base Intel drivers may not be appropriate. Only the specific drivers from that secondary provider may work.
You could check this link to Intel® drivers.. http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/cs-009236.htm
Good luck.

combining the date, chipset and I/O chip gives me this match:

08/07/2002-i845G-ITE8712-6A69VX3IC-00 Acorp 4D845G

There's a review here so you can see if it is the board:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ddr ... 494-8.html

If so, I'll compile a list of the drivers you might be needing.

Hi Evasive,

Just when you think that the light at the end of the tunnel is a train, some one turns up with a bright spotlight. Thanks for the effort.

I have used the link and although the board is very similar, mine does not have the two red slots and where there is a bank of 5 white slots plus an offset brown, mine has 6 green slots of the same size. Perhaps not relevant but all slots on my board are green including the memory slots.

Since raising the issue on this site, I have raised it on Intel Support Community with a photo of the board (I have not sussed out how to insert an image on this site). I also tried to send this reply + photo to your e-mail tag, but this was greeted with a 'failure' notice.

I have also managed to read this information on the chips: -

Intel FW82801DB FW218IC20 SL66K
CMI8738/PCI-6ch-LX HRTF 3D Audio MFAPP 0230 UGG 1DE Manufacturer: Cesdx?
ITE IT8712F-A 0228-GXS MF4 JHO
RTL8100B 25203A1 Manufacturer: RealTek?
RTM360-111R 23271Q2 2144 Manufacturer: RealTek?

Thanks again for your investigations

Peter

right next to the coin battery there is a chip in a brown plastic holder... what is written on that chip? If the Chaintech cables are original to the board. you should see a model number in ct-xxxx (x = number or letter).
