Totals just under 1300.
unknowns:
not sure that i need the 3.2ghz, or just get the 3.06 - only saving $25 though.
i might ditch the HDD off the list as well - i've still got a number of drives hanging around...but i typically get a new fresh one with each build.
depending on how it works out with my old machine (and whether i sell it whole or part it out) i might or might not need a new optical drive, they're cheap anyways, so i'm not worried.
mostly this is for lots of games. my steam list over the last few months has grown quite large...plus i'll be jumping on the battlefield 3 bandwagon when that comes out at the end of october.
max budget is about where it is now - redistribution of money is on the table, but i can't see myself spending more than ~1300.

What are you planning to use as a HSF? Most of the larger, better cooling heatsinks will hit the top of your RAM. Figure out what you're going to use, you may have to switch your RAM choice.

I see no intention on overclocking so I bet using the stock Intel heatsink/fan included with his boxed CPU. Gaming machine does mean fast, not automatically means overclocking

i haven't been overclocking for a while now, so i probably wouldn't on this machine.
stock HSF was my first choice - if need-be, i would consider an aftermarket but not for a while. since i'm heading out of a micro-ATX (and lanbox type case) i feel i have considerable more options out there for HSF...even going to a taller cooler, which have been completely off-limits to me in my current case.

Stock cooler will work, I hsve the same proc, and that's what I'm using for now. They tend to go through fans pretty often, though. Noctura makes a few good, low profile coolers that won't break the bank.

so the fan on the stock HSF degrades quickly?
my machines tend to stay on pretty much 24/7, so not many heat (hot to cold to hot) cycles...more warm to hot to warm.
i've never used noctua's stuff yet, seem to have some nice components.

The motherboard supports 2 x SATA 6Gb/s - so I'd look for a 6GB/s HD (not 3Gb/s), $60 for : Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

good point thomas.
i've sourced a 1tb black 6gb/s drive locally that they're price-matching to newegg.
now to decide what to do with windows.
i'm running 32bit vista right now, but will be going 64bit windows 7. my understanding is i can get the upgrade disk, and do a fresh/clean install of windows 7. is that right?
otherwise, i'll just eat the price hike and get the windows 7 retail. i want at least professional so as to be able to have xp mode...

Not 100% sure you "need" 7 Pro for that. I have Home Premium and have run programs in XP mode before.

goodies arrived yesterday, so i dove in and built it up.
took longer than i expected, was trying to be careful and overly neat with the cabling.
once i got to the windows install my old IDE LiteOn dvd writer drive wouldn't boot windows7. grabbed a new SATA LiteOn from the local wally world, plugged it in and off it went. about 20 minutes later and 2 update-necessitated restarts i was good to go.
system is rediculously quiet...and cool. haven't run it through a full stress test yet - but no signs of any instability so far. lost over an hour trouble-shooting the dvd drive not reading, then some more time getting the replacement..just ran out of time last night.
case is a little larger than i expected, for a mid tower. does make it nice for cable-routing and hookup.
initial reaction - very good!
