Looking to buy a portable auto GPS unit. Not looking to cut any corners with this. I have read where Garmin GPS's have pop-up ads that can't be turned off. I can see how this can be annoying.

Are there any brands or models that do not have this pop-up ad feature ?

Thanks...

where did you read that? in the tomtom support forums? best way: go to the shop and select the one you like for readability under angle, portability, ease of use, ease of mounting and additional costs to keep it up to date, some manufacturers charge you a premium to keep the maps up to date, others will give you free updates for a limited time. especially since you want to cut no corners, you must see the actual product before buying it.

Be aware, no matter how good any GPS brand is, it may not work properly in cities with tall buildings! The units depend on three satellite links (views) for 'triangulation' accuracy.
Consumer Reports® rates most GPS units as to performance, price and accuracy.

You can see an example of it mentioned in Karl's link plus various Garmin reviews.....

My TomTom works pretty well. The only problem I find is that you have to pay for new/updated maps every so often. And they are quite costly.
Just checked and an updated Canada & Alaska map is running about $85-$90 bucks.

Not bad for a little update year by year. I think the map book in my glove box cost me 7 bucks...

I use Maps, but my wife uses her Verizon Phone (shows map and talks turn by turn).

Although the monthly charge is annoying, the software should be updated by Verizon all the time...
