All types of computer memory need a 'parity' bit. That is why 1 KB of memory is tallied as 1024 bits, not 1000. The older memory chips were identical, but you needed a "low" or "even" set and a "high" or "odd" set. "Low" memory accesses the 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and so forth bits. The "high" memory accesses the 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and so forth bits. Every 8th bit of memory requires one parity bit association. The parity bit merely identifies the data as "odd" or "even". Even with modem data, you have need for a parity bit.. the formula being n,8,0 (null bit, 8 data bits, parity bit). Memory and Parity:
