ACER HEATSINK/FAN do I need paste on the back fixture?

Postby kumakan » Tue Apr 06, 2010 4:51 pm

Hi! this is my first post and I hope im putting this in the correct place.
I just replaced my mobo and I had to remove my heatsink. While doing this I noticed that it had four pins going through the mobo into a Metal Fixture on the back. Now the metal fixture had some kind of glue like adhesive that stuck it to the back of the mobo.

Now my question is... Now that I am placing this onto my new mobo do I need to have some type of glue for the back fixture? My friend thought I should just put thermal paste as I would for the cpu part... but I didn't want to just incase. I searched google for answers and I ended up here =) hopefully someone can help me out.

I have a ACER HEATSINK FAN HI.3670C.001 REV.A.

Here is the link to the heatsink I have.

(Sorry can't make this a url link, site says i need 5 posts... =\)
In the last picture you can actually see the metal backing.
Do I need glue? or can I just put it straight onto the mobo?
Ty for any help!

No, you don't put thermal paste on that. It's simply a support/tension bracket to keep the motherboard from flexing when the heatsink is tightened down. Some aftermarket ones have adhesive to keep the backplate from moving, and to aid installation of the heatsink (those allow you to remove the heatsink for a CPU change or whatever without having to remove the motherboard as well) but it's not necessary. Just use the plate as is.
