Last night, I saw that my computer had updates to install, so I did a complete shutdown.

This morning, when I turn the computer on, everything seems fine, until the Windows XP screen comes up, and then the computer resets and begins the boot and post part all over.
It then gives me a 'windows did not start correctly' screen.
I've tried doing safe mode, last good configuration boots, none of that affects the problem.
i went into the bios and reset to defaults, and that too did not help.

Not sure what info you need to help me with this.
I'm using a gigabyte ma790x-ud4p with 4 gigs of ram.
an amd athlon x2
antec ps (600 watts iirc)

This system has been running perfectly since I built it about 6 months ago, and now this!

Your help would be greatly appreciated. I've searched both this site and the rest of the internet, and can find no info on this situation.

thank you in advance.

Is "Disable automatic restart on [something] failure" one of the options?

If so, try that. It should come up with an error message.

*Oh yeah, press f5 or f8 right after POST completes.

1.Navigate to the Control Panel in Windows XP by left-clicking on Start, followed by Settings and then choosing Control Panel.

2.In the Control Panel window, open System.

Note: In Microsoft Windows XP, depending on how your operating system is setup, you may not see the System icon. To correct this, click on the link on the left-hand side of the Control Panel window that says Switch to Classic View.

3.In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.

4.Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button.

5.In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.

6.Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.

7.Click OK in the System Properties window.

Doing that won't solve your problem, BUT it will help us find the problem for you. Instead of rebooting, it'll show you the BSoD, when it happens. We need the string of codes that string shows. Everything, not just the first line.

Of course, that assumes you can eventually get into Windows. Have you tried to repair your XP install with the XP CD?

How old is that Antec supply? What exact model is it?

I'm seeing what the xp disk can do to fix this.
The PS is 6 months old, and I already hooked it up to a p/s tester and it's readings are all good.
I'll click off the automatic restarts once I can get xp to run.
I'm suprised that I can load windows even in safe mode.

Luckily, I have this laptop, or I'd be in real big trouble.

using the recovery on the xp disk, should i have it write a new boot sector, or is that a bad idea?
Frankly, never used the recovery programs, so I'm kinda lost here.

Thanks again

Ya mean one of those little $25 PSU tester jobbies? Those things are useless. Never use anything less than a multimeter. Just because the lights on the PSU say there's power, it does NOT tell you of that power is in an acceptable range, nor if it's fluctuating all over the place.

What model Antec PSU? We need to know that.

No, you do not have to overwrite the MBR, Windows will only do that if it absolutely needs to.

No, I have a p/s tester that shows a real-time readout of volts, amps etc for each lead. But, I hear you on that. dummy lights are called that for a reason lol

I used XP to fix the computer.
Funny thing is, it fixed my old drive, as it could not find the more recent drive that I was booting from.
A bit of a pain now, but I can access the other drive, just not boot from it. That must have been the error it was having from the start. I'll have to investigate further.
