The real problem develops when over 50% of the voters are confiscating earnings from the most productive voters - and policy becomes based on simply taking more money in hopes of getting more for the unproductive. Worse yet, it leads to irresponsible voting.
Also, once it starts, taxing becomes a burden on society - not only taking resources that could be spent or invested and blowing them on administrators (the Government is not very effective at utilizing a high percent of resources collected, much benefit is simply dissipated by PORK to repay contributors and administrative expense). The other problem is that we are quite capable of choking our own resources to the point of constraining productivity and self-sufficiency.
Consider the 'Energy Tax' (and associated restrictions on use of energy). While conservation always makes economic sense, artificial restrictions based on political excuses to confiscate resources can actually make a problem worse. The only thing that Taxing Energy will do is to punish energy users and drain potential from the free market to grow and prosper.
For example, Offshore Drilling. Argument is to restrict such development for environmental reasons (but since we can only regulate ourselves, we'll end up paying other Nations to do what we refuse to do). Also, we may easily be misguided regarding what might actually be best for the environment (especially where discussion is considered 'bad', although we all can agree that pollution is bad - I personally don't buy in to CO2 as a 'pollutant', CO, NOx, SOx, Particulate contamination, etc. makes sense - but we really can't discuss it because the topic is 'forbidden').
We can't discuss how our economy might be able to grow and prosper, because we would be seen as 'racist' 'astroturf' 'radcals' - let's start with Offshore Drilling for Petrol:

Or a recent issue (again, considered 'politically incorrect' and 'not an issue' by leadership and media), Global Warming (and how much do we need to pay to 'buy' a more perfect climate):

But none of this will be on PBS, CNN, CBS, NBC, or most Government-controlled media (interestingly, Austrailian News sources seem more inclined to actually investigate and report the controversy)... hey, we've already been told there's no problem, right ?
