My 50th birthday presents finally arrived a month and a half late. I wasn't surprised in the card everyone signed I knew what I was getting. A Radeon HD 5870 and Newegg gift card. This graphics card came today http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102861 with a gift card for $1300. Thanks to my wife for taking up a nice collection from family and friends.

I have went over all the pros and cons on a AM3 or 1156 based rig using only one card. The only reason I did not go AMD AM3 was the lack of choices on upper tier motherboards and the features I was looking for. It had nothing to do with which is better. Both have there strengths and weaknesses. So here is what I have come up with and I'm open to any changes.

Motherboard: ASUS P7P55 WS SuperComputer LGA 1156 Intel P55 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131594

CPU: Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115214

Heatsink: ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 92mm Fluid Dynamic CPU Cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134

Memory: 2 sets of CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145265

Power Supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-750HX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139010

Primary Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319

Storage Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Green WD15EADS 1.5TB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136351

CD/DVD Burner: SAMSUNG http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151192

Case: LIAN LI Lancool PC-K62 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112239

Total with combo specials and SH $1292.98

I'm sure happy I bought my several retail copy's of Windows 7 Home Premium This summer when they were at that great bargain price. Other wise I would be screwed on going over.

Thats a nice chunk of change. What made you decide on the i7 860 over a 920? Just wondering since that's the decision I'm trying to make right now.

My wife's build is the 1366 920, ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard, 12 GB off Corsair DDR3 1600 (2GB X 6 ), and a 2 Radeon HD 4870 in Crossfire. She needs this power because of the chemistry CAD programs she runs for work at home. Had it since January and it's a nice rig. The only problem was getting the memory timings right, and it was a pain in the rear. But the 1366 were designed for her line of work.

Me on the other hand, hard core game, rip music and DVD 's, edit home movies to DVD's, some light photo editing, and basic home and business records. My son has a Phenom II 955 I built. I ran some games and programs and used his and my wife's rig and couldn't see the difference. Except in editing movies which I don't do that often to justify the price of a 1366 rig.

The other reason is the days of needing 2 graphics cards in SLI or Crossfire for gaming is not really needed any more. So I'm going with one high end card this time. Some people would argue that point but with the new cards, I'm not buying into it anymore. So only one X 16 PCI express lane was needed. If I feel the need for more GPU power later on I'll get one of the dual HD 5870 when there released. And that should be plenty.

With the need for only 1 GPU, and 8GB of ram it was going to be the Phenom II 955 or the i7-860 LGA 1156. Both were in my budget or should say gift card. The lack of choices for high end AMD boards pushed me to Intel. ( Motherboards in the $200 to $275 range) I did resource on the new 6 cores cpu's also and it looks less likely with Intel I'll get stuck with a board that won't be able to use one because of no bios upgrade. My currant board got hit hard with this and the Phenom II's and I have a funny feeling about the AM3 board's at the end of there cycle. AMD may release 1 or 2 6 core CPU's for the AM3 but that will be it I think. With no mainstream AM4 boards tell next year, the Intel 1156 is future proof for at least 2 years which is my time frame on builds I use.

What it really came down to was I tossed out the high ( 1366 which is over kill for my needs ) Dropped the low ( AM3 end of cycle ) and went with what was just right for my needs.

I would be tempted to up the power on the PSU.. 8gb of RAM is a tad on the overkill for what you do, but it is all personal choice... At least if you down the RAM and up the PSU, you can add RAM at a later date if so required....

The more I think about it up to the CORSAIR CMPSU-850HX would be the better choice and drop the other set of ram. Plus after reading about the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 push pins coming loose, I'm looking for something that locks down better. I'm thinking about this Heat sink the Noctua NH-U9B 92mm SSO CPU Cooler and the mounting kit for it.

I agree that 8GB or Ram is overkill and you should get a better PSU if you plan on overclocking. Good choice on the case. I was deciding on PC-K62 or the CM storm Sniper Black edition but now leaning towards the K62 because of the build quality and style. Do you have enough monitors for Eyefinity? lachen

No But I would sure like to get another monitor or 2. I will be getting another 22'' or 24'' wide when I catch up with my wife In February who just started working in the UK. I'll be leaving this currant rig here while I work on the family farm. That is why I had to get a new case other wise I would use what the currant one.
