The same version you used to create the backup would be best. I have found that with recent versions of Acronis, the later versions handle restore of earlier versions OK.

Make sure you get a valid key so you can register and get updated builds for 2009. I believe 2009 supported Vista, but check the Acronis web site. I am an XP user -- no Vista for me.

Ack. I used Acronis recently to restore an image to the new hard drive after the old one crashed, and it was a complete disappointment. These things sound great until you actually have to use them in the clinch, and then...the truth comes out. Norton Ghost is probably the best.

Of course, you're talking about money and licenses. I got a great deal on Acronish home 2009 and I am sure it works fine with any OS. However, again...it didn't come through in the clinch. Restored the drive partially. You have to remember exactly what name you used for the computer, the user...not Bob but Bob Jones, etc. -- if you don't get everything exactly right it all is a waste of time. Again, Norton for me.

If you are restoring drive or partition images with Acronis, all you should need is the backup image file (.tib file) and a drive or partition large enough to hold the image.

I have been usng the product for seven or eight years maintaing seven systems and have never needed to supply computer names, user names and such for the restore process. I've also never had a failed restore attempt. (Knock on wood)

But life is full of options and Ghost is also a fine product.

Yep, I figured that out too late. I had already formatted. If you have Acronis, you should just be able to put the bootable disk in, connect the USB drive which contains the original image and let it go. Is that how it works? Because I didn't get that.

Would the PC be able to locate an external usb drive without drivers?

Thanks.

I can't really remember, I think I used the miniPE XT boot disk, that does have drivers for USB I guess...

Absolutley ... I have had some flakiness if my mouse and keyboard are wireless usb connected but never a problem with detecting USB connected drives or eSATA connected drives. The Acronis boot loader on the recovery disk has always found my USB connected drive(s).
