|
|
I have two laptops I am trying to fix. HP ZE2000 and Compaq C500.
HP laptop problem: The battery charges just fine, but when I press the power button it turns off ~2-3 seconds later. HDD engages for a half-second.
Compaq problem: Boots up perfectly fine, but does not work from AC at all. I can hear a buzzing sound with battery charged and laptop off; with removed battery or discharged, more of a quick clicking.
Now, if you didn't know, the batteries and PSUs are interchangeable. Same model numbers. So X out on faulty charger. That is how I can get the Compaq to boot.
I also feel that it is important to mention that I have repaired these in the past and lost a few screws.
Please let me know if I need anything else.
Thanks in advance. |

Both laptops, follow basic trouble shooting for laptops...
1) remove the hard drive and see if the system powers up...
2) Change the RAM, or at least reseat it - do this with AC out and battery out, press the power button for 30secs too which discharges all capacitors (esp on gateway laptops)...
Now on the HP, it could be both the above, however, it looks like a dead mainboard...(also try reseating the CPU and replacing the thermal comound on the CPU, video card and chipset cooler...)..
On the compaq, it looks like a short on the DC jack on the motherboard.. Simple to repair aprt from having to strip out the board to do so... _________________ The trees are bare and everywhere

I am impressed at the speed of the response!
HP: Put RAM in both sockets. Does not stay on from any power source. Maybe a loose heatsink?
Compaq: Also put RAM in both sockets; hey, I removed everything but the button board and DC jack and cable. No shortage. Might be useful for you to know that it says the battery is charging when it has one. Otherwise, the charge light blinks rapidly, battery or not. (crapcaps or bad relay perhaps?)
You guys are the BOMB!!!
*If it is faulty boards, that's $500US I've gotta save. |

| It is an odd one, but I have seen this happen and it was a bad solder joint on the DC jack, it is worth investigating... If you do replace the jack (with a new one) stick it on with either normal superglue or a blob of silicon sealent - it strenthens the job... _________________ The trees are bare and everywhere

Ah. While I had the Compaq to bare components, I heard the clicking coming from around the processor area. Somewhere between where DC cable plugs in and the proccessor. Bottom side.
I'll try your tips though.

Well, components are starting to fall off HP board (already seen individual diodes and capacitors floating), and have already lost a USB port. And Compaq is being more stubborn than a donkey, WITH a broken hinge. To top it off, I have lost almost all screws.
Well, my shopping list:
*HP ZE2000 series motherboard
*Bag of complete HP ZE2000 screws
*Compaq C500 Motherboard
*Bag of complete Compaq C500 screws
*Compaq C500 LCD hinges/braces (the left one broke internally due to the right one being broken AT the hinge)
This totals ~$550.
Thing is, if they weren't broken, that would be worth both together!
Well, maybe I oughta start some sort of business? _________________ PCChips M810LMR

See if you can get both of them complete in working order second-hand for that amount of money, transfer your clients harddisks to them and presto, you pay the same and have a load of spare-parts in one go. And save yourself a lot of time rebuilding them. _________________ We hate rut, but we fear change.

Starting to consider that.
On our craigslist, I have seen a couple people look for screens for my exact model. Maybe I could make money off the deal _________________ PCChips M810LMR

The HP has Socket 754m. I have heard s754 is capable of 64bit processors.
Do you think it could support a 64-bit proc? If so.... _________________ PCChips M810LMR
