Woes upon woes!
Finally got the new caps to put in, and now I discover that seven more caps are bad! They are 1500 mfd. 6.3 volts, right by the CPU!! Same brand!

AAARRRGGGHHH!

Edit:
Finally got all the caps I needed for this board. Now for time (and patience!) to replace them.
Found a source on eBay that has quite a good variety of caps and very nice prices.. Time Sensitive Components Inc. You can also order direct via Email to: sales@timesc.com . Don't ask about mobo versions.. ask only for the specific caps and quantity you need.

Alright. Even though I'm not planning to make a daytime job out of it, I officially recapped my first board and it works cool

I guess the coffee pot is also happy.. and at rest now! lol lol
Once you get past the 'first step' the next one is easier!
I recapped my ECS 848P mobo in less than an hour.. and it has worked flawlessly for more than 12 hours. Guess it is time to be "back in service".

recapped the other two as well. Indeed, once you got your first one working it gets easier.

edit: the second one is working as well cool

I have to add another victim though: MSI MS-6168 VER:2 as found in some Packard Bell systems. Affected caps are branded "Chhsi" and "JPCON". I'll post pics of them once they're out of the board.

edit2: My AV49N is working as well. 3 out of 3
edit 3: The MS-6168 was restored to business with some salvaged good caps from other boards (Sanyo). 4 out of 4

Here comes the fun bit. I have 4 boards here. A Foxconn, a MSI, an Asrock and an Albatron. Only the Albatron has no known listed bad caps on it. To give you an idea of the extent this is going into.

All Soltek boards are bad.
All Jetway boards are bad.
Many Shuttle boards are bad.
Many Asrock boards are bad.
Many MSI boards have bad caps. Not completely but they have bad caps.

The more I read about this stuff, the angrier I get...

Quite a list! And it isn't limited to motherboards or PSU circuit boards. All of the electronics industry has had problems with the "bad caps" syndrome! Lets you realize why NASA and other agencies demand only the 'best' of any product!
There were some incidents of mis-labeled caps that failed due to heat or over-voltage conditions. But this plague was caused by espionage and a faulty formula. Hope that the person(s) responsible have suffered ruefully.

Point is, is the mainboard suppliers aren't bothred as they look at the motherboard as a disposable item..... If you notice, no laptop motherboards there - I have not seen a bad one on the many laptops I have looked at... Why? Laptop motherboards have a shorter manufacture 'run' compared to desktop boards, so less are produced, also capaictors seem smaller to fit in to the chassis compared to desktops...(plus of course the usual voltages etc...)...

can't use electrolytics in laptop because of the size. Usually using solid or tantalum. Since laptop are expensive to begin with, they're using more expensive kinds and brands of caps too.
