Some older games will work well with XP or Vista, such as Heretic 2. If you are into war games, then DFLW and DFE are good games. If you enjoyed the old DOOM game, then a remake for the newer DOOM3 engine of the original is not to be missed!
The Half-Life series also is good, and so is the original Halo and later issues.
If into 'space' games, then Descent 3 would be enjoyable. Quake 4 is a good 'space' game too. Baldur's Gate is also good.

I keep an old Pentium III @ 600 with Win 98SE operating, mainly for its true command-prompt mode for my old favorites.

I heartily second this game It is a better version of Oblivion. I put over 100 hours of game play into this game.

Cheap, entertaining, makes one think - "Space Rangers 2 - Rise of the Dominators" should be about $20. Requires DVD drive, but CPU, graphics and memory requirements are not much.
Written in Russia and translated to English - it can be installed in Russian if desired, an RPG that allows quite different approaches to victory.
I played it for many hours, and after I finally won (OK- I had to restart the game a few times, because as I learned how it works I realized that I'd never get anywhere). Then I had to try again, increase difficulty level, change Race and Specialty.
And it IS cheap ! For $20 you'll have one heck of a time - and it includes Space Rangers 1 (which you won't want to play once used to 2 because 2 is easier to operate).
Better living thru technology...

The Witcher. Awesome game, and one of the very few that I replayed the second I finished my first run through it.

If you're open to something older, perhaps something like Sacred or the first two Fallout games. But the best of the older games, in my estimation, are the Baldur's Gate games followed by the Icewind Dale series.

*edit* Some others that you may want to investigate as well:

Jade Empire
Star Wars:Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars:The Sith Lords
Antec Nine Hundred

Okay... then why post in a thread specifically about RPGs? I doubt the LadyExile cares what your preferences are when all she wanst is input on what are some good ones to play.
